Who conducts local elections?

Elections to the local bodies are conducted by the 'State Election Commission (SEC).
Like the Election Commission, SEC is :

  • An Autonomous and Constitutional body
  • Responsible for conducting free and fair elections
  • Responsible for enforcing the Model Code of Conduct

Local body elections have been delayed for various reasons in Bangalore, Mumbai and Delhi, which makes us wonder if they genuinely operate in an autonomous manner.

One important tip:
Before every election, check if your name is on the voter list.

In some states, SECs prepare their voter list independent of the EC. Even if your name is on the voter list for the Assembly and General elections, it could be missing from the voter list of the Local Body elections. Always check that your name is included.
