Gruha Lakshmi Scheme - all you need to know!

The Gruha Lakshmi scheme was introduced to provide a monthly allowance of Rs 2,000 to women in households that are Below Poverty Line (BPL). It was launched on August 30th 2023 in Karnataka with great political excitement. After applying and receiving approval, the women receive a monthly allowance directly to their bank account, thus adding to their income stability!

Why was the scheme introduced?

The scheme was introduced to ensure women who are the head of their households (or sole earners) receive a minimum support from the government.

Oh! But is Rs 2,000 worth the effort of registration?

A BPL citizen (who is spending Rs. 33 a day in urban areas and only Rs. 27 a day in rural areas) requires various aspects of state and civil society support to ensure bare minimum wellbeing. This can take the form of support to construct pakka houses, ration to cook food and state-provided employment. Despite a mix of these, families are still suffering from extreme poverty, especially where a woman is the sole earner. This scheme thus improves lives through financial assistance that they can use based on their needs. It improves financial practices like saving, accruing interest among others.

Do you know any women near you who can benefit from the scheme? By taking a small action and registering them for the scheme, you can improve lives!
